Collins Education - Year 7/8/9

Edexcel GCSE - Year 10/11

Students have the option of taking either Dual or Triple Science at GCSE depending on their KS3 grades and teacher reports. They give 2 and 3 science GCSEs respectively.

Each science is covered separately as Biology, Chemistry and Physics, each with 3 units available. At the end of each unit students will sit an external examination.

As well as written examinations, students must also complete 2-3 controlled assessments which count towards their final grade.

In the first few years of high school, it is very important to gain that scientific skills and basic understanding of key scientific concepts in order to succeed at GCSE. KS3 science covers all 3 sciences together linking food chains to photosynthesis to chemical reactions, the sun and our solar system.

Practical thinking skills are also very important and students are guided in writing scientific write-ups for practicals including, predictions, methods, graphs and conclusions.

BTEC Applied Science - Year 10/11

For some students who the school feels may not benefit from exam conditions, students are given the opportunity to complete BTEC Applied Science. This course is entirely based on coursework assignments and covers much of the same content that the Edexcel GCSE course encompasses.

Students can achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction by the end of their course depending on how many tasks they have completed in each assignment.

Students are expected to spend a lot of time doing their own research and practising their written communication skills.

Engaging and inspiring, our Biology A Level has been developed from the best of the pre-2008 Edexcel and Salters Nuffield Advanced Biology (SNAB) specifications. It has been designed to engage and inspire students by showing how an understanding of many contemporary issues requires a grasp of fundamental biological ideas. With a realistic, manageable level of content and assessment, it provides an enjoyable teaching and learning experience.

A-Level Biology (Edexcel Nuffield)

Developed from the best of the pre-2008 Edexcel Chemistry and Nuffield specifications, our engaging and inspiring GCE Chemistry specification enables contemporary chemistry contexts to be included within the teaching and learning programme. With a realistic, manageable level of content and assessment, it provides an enjoyable teaching and learning experience.

Physics A will prepare students for a career or further study in physics, engineering, one of the other sciences or related areas. While the teaching of practical skills may be integrated with the theoretical topics, they are assessed separately. This allows skills to be developed in a way suited to an individual centre.
